Attending University

College and career guidance at German International School Boston reflects our overall approach of providing each student with tailored support. Our small size allows our College and Career Counselor, teachers, and specifically our faculty team providing college guidance, to truly get to know students over the course of years of learning together. Students benefit from one-on-one support, group sessions, workshops, and visits from university representatives as they work to choose colleges and universities that closely match their interests and strengths. Our advising team works closely with each Upper School student and their family to provide information and assistance in preparing application materials for both North American and European institutions of higher learning.

As research demonstrates, standardized tests reflect only limited aspects of students’ knowledge and potential. That said, students have multiple opportunities to take the PSAT and SAT and we are proud of GISB students’ strong performance on these flawed, yet widely used, measures.

Much more indicative of success, in our opinion and that of the admission officers with whom we have spoken, is a young person’s overall academic record. As recipients of the German International Abitur, our graduates hold a widely-recognized honors degree equivalent to a full load of Advanced Placement coursework or an International Baccalaureate. We have learned from our graduates currently attending US colleges that the Abitur is considered at some institutions to be equivalent to introductory courses or general requirements, allowing GISB graduates to skip over first-year work and dive deeply into more advanced courses in subjects they are passionate about.

Our graduates have been accepted to a wide range of respected and competitive institutions in the United States and around the world.
